How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
I contributed to Sandfire Dragon Ranch by treating all of the bearded dragons for pinworms, as well as daily care for the bearded dragons which included feeding and cage cleaning. I also helped feed the newts every day and search for newt eggs so that they could hatch and grow in a safe place. Because I am doing my POL early, I still have more opportunities to contribute to Sandfire Dragon Ranch. I am currently working on the website, which will help the business grow by get more customers.
How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
This internship has been very meaningful to my education because it gave me a chance to not only observe, but experience first hand, how much work goes into breeding and keeping animals. Now when I become a veterinarian, I will be able to look at challenges from multiple perspectives and be able to come up with a solution that works for everyone. Before this experience, I thought about animal medicine on a small scale. But now, I can see the need for large scale medicine that is easy to administer and is not to expensive, so that animals can be healthy from when they are born to when they get purchased.
How did your project go from an idea or inspiration to a final product?
My project is not a final product yet because of the fact that I am doing my POL a week early due to the fact that my mentor is going to be away. I first got the idea that Sandfire could use some help with their website before I started internship. I was researching the business beforehand, and came across their website that was 'under construction'. Then, about a week into the internship, I asked my mentor if he wanted to use any of the photos I had taken for his website. He then explained how he was having trouble with his website and I offered to help. Right now I am working on getting the login information so that I am able to edit the website. I took pictures of all of the breeding pairs of dragons, so once I get the information I will create a new page and upload them.
