Mask
Mask Artist Statement
I organized my mask in a similar way to the periodic table of elements. The Periodic Table of the Elements is organized by atomic number and element type. I organized the back of my mask by the order it will happen in my life. I put science on the bottom, math next, and humanities after, because those are some the classes that I will have to complete before graduating high school. Then I put college, then my future career as a veterinarian. I represented the 5 categories by doing a collage of pictures that represent them. On the Periodic Table of the Elements, the similar elements are grouped together, for example rocks with rocks, gases with gases. I followed a similar pattern on my mask, organizing classes together then future goals.
My two identities can coexist peacefully most of the time because they are very similar. I don’t act that much differently at school then at home. The only difference is that I probably talk more at school. My identities can conflict when I want to get great grades, but also have hobbies such as synchronized swimming. I have to plan my time so that I will have time for both. I think Neodymium is the element that represents me the most. Neodymium is a rare earth metal, which means not that many people have heard of it. This is similar to me because I am not a very social person. Neodymium is also very important to our community because it makes most magnets. I hope to be important to our community too someday like Neodymium.
The front of my mask contains a lot of symbolism. First, the tree represents my love and passion for the environment and helping to stop pollution. The bird that is my eye represents my love for animals. I made my mouth out of soil because real nature before people change it makes me very happy. I represented my happiness by putting it on a smile. On the back, I put lots of different pictures of things that represent my 5 categories. My categories are; math, humanities, science, college, and career. For Math, I used pictures of math problems, numbers, and whiteboards. For science I did a plant diagram, some squares from the periodic table, and a beaker. For humanities, I collaged pictures of books, words, and letters. In my college section, I used pictures of college classroom buildings and college logos. Then finally, on the top is my future career as a veterinarian. I used pictures of animals and vets. Also, another example of symbolism on the back is the road. The road starts on the bottom as a dirt road, to show how I am not very sure of my future, then it transitions into a paved road as I become closer to reaching my goals.
The front of my mask also contains symbolism. The tree and whole theme represents my love for nature and animals. I showed this by adding leaves and dirt to my mask. The birds flying show my love for animals, especially birds. The purple border around my whole mask is symbolic for my love of the color purple. It also shows that I am a girl because it is sparkly glue. This shows I am a girl, but not overly girly. I choose to paint my mask to show my love for art. The inspiration for my work comes from nature. I used things I see often such as trees, leaves, and dirt to make a face. I feel that nature is so perfect, that I hope my mask has some of the natural beauty of nature.
